Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural changes.
