A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
